GARAGE ROBBERIES:
Garage Robberies have continued during the past week in the Honeydew Precinct and is currently a huge problem. Garage owners/managers are asked to make contact with Honeydew SAPS in order to update their details on our systems and are also invited to please attend the Garage Forum meeting on 8th October 2008 at 11h00, in the Board Room at the Police Station.
Details regarding some of the Garage Robberies over the past weekend:
• At about 20:54 on Friday evening three suspects entered the shop at a garage, in Randpark Ridge, pretending to be customers. The suspects then instructed the cashier to hand over the money in the till and also took cigarettes before fleeing the scene on foot.
• On Saturday morning at approximately 02:30 two well dressed suspects armed with a firearm entered the garage tuck-shop, in Randpark Ridge, demanding the money in the till and fled the scene in a Toyota Camry.
HOUSE BREAKING (RESIDENTIAL PREMISES):
Home owners are requested to please review the security at their properties. During the past week an Environmental Analysis was done by Honeydew
SAPS‘s Crime Intelligence Office and the following findings were observed. (Residents are asked to please take note of these findings and where possible to address them):
• Post boxes were overflowing with post that has not been removed.
• Big palisade gates are left open due to electric gate motors that are out of order.
• Front doors and security gates are left standing wide open with keys hanging in the door locks.
• Properties have big trees on the road verge, with branches hanging over the perimeter wall into the residential premises. This makes is easy for the criminals to gain access into the premises (even where electric fencing is in place).
• Big bushes, shrubs and trees are present at or near the front gate which is an easy hideaway for criminals.
The current “Hotspot” details regarding House breaking at residential premises are:
Suburbs - Weltevreden Park and Ruimsig
Times - Between 06:00 and 18:00
HIJACKING:
On Sunday morning at about 04:10 a complainant was driving along Marina Drive next to Zandspruit. He was on his way back from work when he noticed a dark coloured BMW parked next to the road. As he got closer to this vehicle an armed suspect jumped out of the BMW, with the firearm and ordered him to stop. His vehicle was hi-jacked and he was left next to the road. Drivers are asked to be extremely careful when driving in the early hours of the morning or late at night and they are advised to take well lit routes.
HOUSE ROBBERIES:
A complainant and his wife were busy unpacking at a Townhouse Complex in Honeydew Ridge, when an unknown suspect with a firearm stormed into their residence followed by four other suspects. The complainant and his wife were tied up and the suspects ransacked the house. The suspects fled the scene with laptops, jewellery, electrical appliances, camera, cellphones etc.
In another incident a complainant was surprised by a suspect in his house in Zandspruit at about: 03:30. The suspect was armed with a firearm and he took the complainant’s cell phone, clothing and cash.
A complainant was sleeping in her Townhouse Complex in Sonneglans at approximately 04:30, when she felt someone touching her. She got a fright when she woke up and noticed three armed suspects next to her bed. The suspects told her to be quiet and they took her cell phone and other property.
SUCCESSES:
Inspector Frieda Massyn from the Honeydew Detective Branch was instrumental in securing good sentences for two suspects in a case, after years of investigation and court appearances.
During December 2005 a 25 year old lady was raped and strangled in the veld in Wilgeheuwel. Two suspects were arrested after the incident. Both suspects were found guilty and sentenced in the Krugersdorp Magistrate’s Court to life imprisonment and were also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

BURGLARIES AT RESIDENTIAL PREMISES: are currently showing a huge increase in the Honeydew SAPS Precinct, for the month of September. Residents are requested to ensure that their security alarms are in a working order - test your alarm system on a regular basis. Townhouse Complexes are the biggest targets and residents staying in these complexes need to ensure that they also have adequate security at their specific units and complexes. The current “Hot Spot” suburbs in the Precinct are: Weltevreden Park, Randpark Ridge and Cosmo City. The times of that this crime is being committed is between: 18:00 and 00:00
THEFT OUT OF MOTOR VEHICLES: owners and drivers of motor vehicles are urged to make sure they lock their vehicle/s properly when leaving them parked at their house, businesses etc. PLEASE activate all the security systems connected to the vehicle even if leaving the vehicle only for a few seconds!!! Where possible DO NOT park your vehicle outside on the verge, rather park it inside the property. Remove all loose items from the inside of the vehicle including the radio and place in the boot or out of sight - Criminals are opportunists and with property lying inside the vehicle it creates an opportunity to break into the vehicle.
BUSINESS ROBBERIES: Garages are still the biggest targets and owners are AGAIN urged to warn their employees to be very careful during evenings when they are most vulnerable.
- During a incident at a garage in Ruimsig one suspect entered the shop, pulled out a firearm and demanded money from the till. The suspect took the money and then fled the scene. While trying to flee the scene the suspect was involved in an accident. He then drove off again but due to the damage on his vehicle, he left the vehicle and fled on foot. The suspect’s vehicle was recovered as well as a toy firearm in the vehicle. The case is being investigated by the Serious Organized Crimes Unit.
- In another incident six armed suspects robbed a garage in Allen’s Nek, one suspect first walked into the shop and confronted the complainant reading the newspaper. This suspect was then joined by the other suspects who took an undisclosed amount of money and the complainant’s cell phone and fled the scene in a white Toyota Corolla and a blue VW polo.

• Two grade 10 learners from Allen Glen High school were walking home, down Dubloon street in Wilgeheuwel when they heard someone screaming for help. They then saw two males running out of a property with bags. They then started chasing these suspects and apprehended one suspect and recovered some of the stolen goods.
• A lady residing in Little Falls noticed four suspects busy stealing a VW golf in Montrose Street in Little Falls. She then phoned the police for assistance. Honeydew SAPS responded to the scene but the suspects had already fled the scene in a maroon Jetta. The members started patrolling the streets and found the suspects in the Maroon Jetta. INFORMATION NOTE
Against Crime Together
The Honeydew Precinct is still experiencing an increase in House Robberies and want to appeal to ALL residents to take the time and go through the following crime tips:
Reject and Report Stolen Goods
Property crimes such as Theft, Housebreaking, Shoplifting, Handbag/ Cellphone snatching and Theft out of Motor vehicles leads to unnecessary suffering and impoverishment. If you buy stolen goods, more victims will suffer, because you provide a market for these goods and an incentive for criminals to keep stealing them. As thieves go about stealing goods to meet the demand for stolen goods they commit other crimes along their way and even murder or assault a witness or helpless victim or rape or injure a vulnerable woman or child.
Receiving stolen goods is also punishable by law. Reject any goods you suspect could have been stolen and report it to the nearest Police Station or Crime Stop at: 08600 10111.
IF THEY STOLE IT AND YOU BUY IT
MORE VICTIMS WILL SUFFER
House Robbery:
When someone uses violence or threatens to use violence against another person in order to steal something on the residential premises of anyone, house robbery is committed.
If your house has been broken into, a crime was committed in your house:
Contact your nearest police station immediately.
Wait until fingerprints and statements are taken before touching anything.
Do not allow private security companies to enter the house or touch anything before the police have arrived.
A list of the make, model, and serial numbers of electrical appliances and other valuable equipment should always be available for investigation purposes.
Prevent House Robbery and Theft:
Know ALL emergency numbers.
Make provision for good outside lighting, but switch the lights off during the day. Outside lights that are on during the day and post left in the gate or post box are signs of no-one being home. Don’t leave your gates, garage, front or back door open or partially open - it serves as an invitation to burglars.
Never open the door automatically whenever the bell rings or if someone knocks. Make sure the person wanting to enter is expected. Domestic workers, garden staff and children are often approached by robbers who act as telephone or TV repairmen, electricians, plumbers, TV licence or municipality inspectors and many other professions. In an effort to gain entrance robbers use a cellphone and make as if they are talking to the owner of the house so as to put pressure on unsuspecting victims to open the gate or door. Those remaining at home should be made aware of these scams. Emphasise the need for security to your domestic worker, so too ensuring his/her own safety. Arrange with people who remain at home on how you will inform them if there is a need for them to open the house for deliveries, maintenance work or repairs. Always use the same procedure and inform the companies involved that they will not gain access unless you have made a specific arrangement.
A watchdog is a good early warning system. Keep them visible as a deterrent but beyond the reach of strangers. The unexplainable death of a watchdog is a warning sign of a possible burglary.
If your house alarm goes off at night, or you hear strange noises or your dogs bark switch on the outside lights.
Always check the identity of strangers who visit for business purposes, to do deliveries or repairs. Ensure that you stay out of their reach to prevent being grabbed through a closed gate.
Report suspicious characters who pose a threat to the police. When employing someone new request their identity document and make a copy thereof for safekeeping. Check their previous employment references and do security clearances through the police.
Install the best security you can afford, for example the security gates at outside doors. Keep these gates locked. If possible fix a door viewer and latch chain.
When approaching your house entrance by foot or by car ensure that it is safe to enter and that you have not been followed. Be aware of persons loitering at the entrance.
Always keep your keys safe to prevent duplication thereof. Never leave your house keys under a doormat or in a pot plant. Once you have locked your door from the inside remove the key and place it in a safe place.
Do not leave keys in a hidden place for domestic staff or children, robbers often stake out a house and will find out about these hiding places. Do not give keys to people who do not live on the property or to anyone if it is not absolutely necessary.
Know your neighbours and build a relationship of mutual trust and support. When going away inform them.
It is always best to arrange with persons living in the same street as you, to be ready at all times to come to the rescue of one another in dangerous or suspicious times. Exchange phone numbers or signalling methods when you find yourself in distress. Your strength always lies in how many people are able to support you in an emergency.
If you buy luxury goods, cut up the boxes and dispose of these in tied black bags - a branded box is a telltale sign of what thieves could find in your house.
Keep cash and valuables in banks or safes.
Store your firearms in a safe.

12th August 2008
Currently there has been an increase in Business Robberies. All businesses are urged to review their security especially at opening and closing time. Ensure that all alarms, panic buttons are in working order.
Garage owners are requested NOT to keep large sums of money on the premises and to rotate banking schedules. Where possible drop safes should be used. Inform all petrol attendants that they need to be aware and alert especially during the evening and over weekends. Suspects often pretend to be customers and enter the shops on the pretext of purchasing something and then produce a firearm. Be on the lookout for suspects driving a white Golf. All emergencies numbers must be readily available to the staff at a central place. Honeydew Ops Room 011-795-1969/60 or 10111. Also note down the physical address of the establishment, as often staff do not know the street name and this poses a problem with response times.
HOUSE ROBBERIES:
Townhouse and Security Complexes are still problematic. Most house robberies are occurring in the early hours of the morning. ALL windows must be closed including bathroom windows.
In an incident in a townhouse complex in Harveston at about 04h00, one suspect entered the unit and held up the family. Jewellery, cellphones, a laptop etc. were taken.
In another incident at a townhouse complex in Ruimsig at about 01h00, the complainant was watching television when he heard glass break. He got up and there were two suspects in the house. One of the suspects fired a shot. The suspects took a television, household appliances and fled the scene, after hitting the complainant's brother with a brick.
THEFT OF MOTOR VEHICLE & THEFT OUT OF MOTOR VEHICLE:
Currently Sector 3, Weltevreden Park and Allen's Nek is showing an increase in this crime. All vehicles must be parked in the premises where possible. All security measures are to be activated (switch on alarm, put gear lock in place) and remove all valuables from the vehicle. It only takes a criminal a few seconds to steal a motor vehicle or to break into a motor vehicle, so secure your vehicle even if you are only going to be away from it for a short length of time. Place all valuables in the boot if you are leaving the vehicle unattended.
SUCCESSES:
SAPS members have been involved in three shooting incidents with criminals during the past week.
In the first incident two members from Honeydew were passing a garage in Dobsonville when suspects were busy robbing the premises. A shootout occurred between the members and the suspects. A member from Honeydew was shot but fortunately it went into his bullet proof. Two suspects were arrested at the scene.
In the second incident members from West Rand Dog Unit were chasing suspects in a hi-jacked vehicle and a shootout occurred. The suspects rolled the vehicle and one of the suspects died at the scene due to injuries he sustained from the accident and another suspect was arrested.
In another incident two members from Krugersdorp Flying Squad were chasing a vehicle that had also been hi-jacked when there was a shootout between the suspects and the SAPS. One suspect was arrested and two others fled the scene. The case is under investigation.

Herewith some of the incidents from the passed week:
HIJACKING:
We are currently experiencing an increase in hijackings and would like residents to be vigilant at all times. Do not let down your guard especially if you are parked in your vehicle and relaxed. Most hijackings occur when people are waiting in their vehicles, either parked at school or when returning home waiting for the gate to open.
In an incident in Little Falls at about 18h50 the complainant was stopped at her gate when she was approached by 5 suspects with pistols. They demanded jewellery and cash and pulled the complainant and her two children out of the vehicle. They then drove off in the vehicle.
In another incident in Allen's Nek at about 12h30, the complainant was at her children's school waiting for them when she was approached by one male with a firearm. He instructed her to open the door. He then got into the vehicle and told her to drive to her home, where she parked the vehicle in the garage. She was tied up in the bedroom. The suspect ransacked the house and packed various household appliances in the vehicle and he fled the scene. The vehicle was alter recovered in Randburg.
STREET ROBBERY:
In an incident in Alsef (Johan Road) at about 10h30 the complainant was walking when she was approached by one suspect armed with a knife. He grabbed her and pushed her to the ground. The complainant started to scream, when a passing motorist heard her screams and stopped. The suspect then ran away.
In another incident in Struben's Valley at about 07h15 the complainant was walking in the street when she was approached by two suspects who held her up with a plastic firearm. They took her cellphone and cash. The complainant screamed and a passing security vehicle from Paracops stopped and she gave them a description of the suspects. Two Mozambican citizens (aged 18 and 19) were arrested and the complainant's property as well as the plastic firearm were recovered.
SAFETY ON THE STREET
Be aware of your surroundings at all times.
If people start milling around you - beware- it could be a set up for a robbery.
Never overload yourself with parcels - it makes you a target.
Do not carry large sums of money, try to carry your wallet/purse in an inside or front pocket.
Let someone know where you are going as well as letting them know when you expect to return.
HOUSE ROBBERY:
In an incident in Bromhof at about 12h00, the complainant was inside the house with her daughter and domestic worker. She was busy working when suddenly there was somebody behind her. A second suspect went to where her daughter was. The complainant was hit over the head. The domestic worker came in and saw what was happening and she rushed to the bedroom and pressed the panic button. The suspects then fled. Honeydew SAPS managed to arrest the one suspect and the second suspect was arrested with the help of a community member and ADT Security. After further investigation the suspects were linked to another house robbery in Bromhof earlier in the day.
In another incident in Weltevreden Park at about 19h00 the complainant was watching television in his house when he was confronted by three suspects with firearms. They ransacked the house fleeing with the stolen goods.
THEFT OUT OF AND THEFT OF MOTOR VEHICLE:
Residents are once again requested to ensure that all security measures have been implemented especially when you are parking your vehicles at shopping complexes, schools etc. All valuables must be removed from the vehicle or placed in the boot where they are not visible.
Due to the vigilance and alertness of a carguard at the Northgate Shopping Centre two suspects were arrested after they had tried to steal a vehicle. The guard saw the Red Fiat Uno attempting to steal a silver Honda Ballade. He immediately radioed the Control Room who dispatched a vehicle and they gave chase out of the shopping centre. The suspects skipped several red robots but the security managed to pull the vehicle over. The vehicle was searched and several car breaking implements were recovered as well as counterfeit money was recovered. The case is presently being investigated by Honeydew Detectives who are trying to link them to other cases of vehicle theft.
SUCCESS
At about 02h00 two properties in the Struben's Valley area were raided and four suspects (three females and one male) were arrested for the possession of fraudulent and cloned passports (from South African, Botswana, Eritrea, Somalia and Great Britain etc.) as well as 72 cloned and stolen credit cards. A stolen motor vehicle (stolen in Namibia) was also found in their possession, as well as equipment used to produce passports and clone/skim credit cards.
In another incident three suspects have been arrested for fraud. They purchase vehicle with false documents. All second hand dealers need to check all documentation that is presented to them (in the way of identity documents, bank statements etc.) to ensure that it is verified through the relevant authorities.
The house robbery task team arrested three suspects for a business robbery in Cosmo City. Another suspect was arrested in Soweto for a house robbery that took place in Little Falls in April 2008. A complainant who reported a hijacking has been arrested for perjury. After investigating the case it was established that the complainant's vehicle had in fact been stolen, not hi-jacked and he was afraid to tell his boss.

Herewith some of the incidents that have taken place over the past week.
MURDER & ATTEMPTED MURDER:
In an incident in Wilgespruit at about 20h00, a couple returned to their residence and parked their vehicle in the garage. They then proceeded to the house and when they were in the house a shot was fired that went through the husband's shoulder and hit his wife. We regret to advise that his wife was declared dead at the scene and the husband was taken to a nearby hospital. An empty cartridge was found outside the house. It is unclear what the motive for the killing was, but it is believed that it could have been robbery. There was no power in the area on the night of the incident and Honeydew SAPS has appealed to the public for any information or if they saw any suspicious activity. They can call D/Insp. Massyn on 011-801-8466.
HOUSE ROBBERY AND MURDER:
In another incident in Cosmo City at about 21h45 the complainant and her children were asleep in the house. When the husband returned from work the wife opened the door for him and she saw three suspects holding her husband at gunpoint. The suspects ordered the complainants to lie down and demanded money and firearms. When the husband tried to tell the suspects he did not have a firearm they fired a shot at him. We regret to advise that he died on the scene. The suspects fled with cellphones and cash.
BUSINESS ROBBERIES:
In an incident in Weltevreden Park at about 18h05 the complainant was busy at the till in the shop, when she was approached by three suspects with firearms. She was told it was a robbery and other suspects joined them. They instructed her to point out the managers. The suspects then took cash and cigarettes and fled the scene.
The day before this incident, the same people visited the business enquiring about a product that this business had to offer and then the next day at about 09h30 the complainant was at work in an office in Zandspruit when the same two males entered the office with firearms and demanded cash. They then fled the scene with the cash.
At a pub in Weltevreden Park the complainant was busy working when three males entered the premises with firearms. They then took cash and cellphones from the employee as well as the customers.
In another incident in Ruimsig the complainant was busy paying his employees in front of a townhouse complex when he was approached by two unknown males. One had a firearm and demanded money. They searched the complainant and took cash, jewellery a cellphone and then fled in the complainant's vehicle.
HOUSE ROBBERY:
In an incident at Cosmo City the complainant was at home with friends when the lights went off. He then went outside to see if there was anything wrong with the main switch. When he was at the switch he was approached by a gunman who ordered him to switch the electricity back on and the suspect then ordered him back into the house where he saw another two suspects with firearms in the house. They demanded money and took him to the bedroom where they took his belongings. They then said he must take them to his uncle's house to look for more money. On the way to his uncle's house he managed to run to the neighbours and alert them as to what was happening. The suspects fled.
WARNING WITH REGARD TO ELECTRICITY SUPPLY
Residents are urged not to venture out at night if the power goes off. There has been a case where a resident went out to the main distribution box to investigate why the power was off and he was then ambushed by a criminal.
In another incident in Weltevreden Park at about 20h00 the complainant was in bed reading when three males entered the room. Two had firearms. The suspects had gained entry through the back door that was not locked. They tied the complainant up and ransacked the house. They loaded the stolen goods into the complainant's vehicle and fled the scene.
In another incident in Randpark Ridge at about 03h45 the complainant was sitting in the lounge watching T.V. when he suddenly saw two males with firearms standing by his side. They tied him up with shoelaces and robbed him of his belongings. The suspects had gained access to the house by removing the glass and burglar bars from a bedroom window.

PROBLEMS BEING EXPERIENCED WITH THE HONEYDEW SAPS SWITCHBOARD
At present we are experiencing a problem with the switchboard line 011-801-8400 due to upgrades to the phone lines. If you are experiencing a problem, kindly call 011-795-1969/60 or 10111 for emergencies.
ASSISTANCE REQUIRED
All victims of house robberies committed by four suspects in a Black V.W. Polo are asked to contact D/Insp. Jan du Bruyn (House Robbery Task Team) on 079-513-6089 to assist in linking the arrested suspects with more house robberies committed. The suspects entered homes in the evenings and tied up the victims and then ransacked the home and fled in the Polo.
WARNING TO ALL SHOP OWNERS:
Shop owners are asked to be aware of a coloured female/s entering the shop and purchasing goods (usually to a small value) in order to see if the debit or credit cards are rejected as stolen, once the purchase has been made. If approached by the security or the owner the suspect/s becomes very violent and abusive and then make a phone call. A coloured male then comes into the shop and becomes threatening if the owner opens a case. They flee the scene in a V.W. Golf V.
OPERATION SECOND HAND DEALERS:
All second hand dealers are again urged to ensure that their operating license etc. is in order. During a recent raid on second hand dealers, in conjunction with J.M.P.D., Eskom and Environmental Health, nine fines were issued, one written warning issued and one case docket opened for the possession of stolen property. Insp. Ian Jackson can be contacted on 072-986-3766 if you have any queries.
ARMED ROBBERY (RESIDENTIAL):
All home owners are once again urged to be extremely vigilant when returning to their properties (especially ladies). Ensure that you are not being followed or that there are no suspicious people or vehicles in your street or near the entrance to your property. When you are opening gates remain vigilant and ensure that no-one is approaching you.
ALL WINDOWS including bathrooms need to be properly closed and secured especially at night, as in a number of incidents the perpetrators have gained access to the house through an open bathroom window. Also ensure that you do not leave any keys near open windows or near windows that can be opened easily. Where possible remove all keys from doors, as once access has been gained the perpetrators are able to let themselves out if keys are in doors.
In an incident in a townhouse complex in Northwold at about 04h15, four males with firearms forced the bathroom window open. They then gained access to the unit tied up the occupants and then ransacked the house taking various household appliances.
In another incident in a townhouse complex in Honeydew Ridge, the suspects arrived at the complex at 11h30 and pretended to be service providers and went to the unit where they overpowered the complaint who was then tied up. Electrical appliances were taken from the scene in a silver V.W. Polo and a white V.W. Golf Velociti.
THEFT OF AND THEFT OUT OF MOTOR VEHICLE:
Residents are urged to ensure that all vehicles are properly secured preferably in a locked garage. If this is not possible vehicles must not be parked on the pavements but must be parked behind closed and locked gates. All items of value must be removed from the vehicle or locked in the boot of the vehicle where they are not visible, not only at residential premises but also at shopping centres. The clip off face of sound systems must be removed from the vehicle and not left in the vehicle.
THEFT OF GATE MOTORS:
At present there has been a huge increase in the theft of gate motors. The current "hotspots" are Weltevreden Park and Allen's Nek. This crime is occurring from 18h00 to 00h00. Residents need to be on the look out for a white Toyota Tazz as well as a blue Toyota Corolla as these vehicles are suspected of being involved in this crime. Residents are asked to mark their gate motor with an identifying name or contact number or address, so that if the motor is recovered we are able to return it to the owner. Gate motors need to be properly secured with reinforcing bolts etc. which makes it more difficult for the motor to be stolen.

Currently the Honeydew Police Station is experiencing huge crime increases in Townhouse Complexes. Electric gates are not working, security gates are left open, security officers let anyone enter, without checking the unit number they complete in the register, or making sure the visitors go to the unit they allegedly are going to visit. Residents are AGAIN urged to take all the necessary safety precautions in order to safeguard themselves as well as their property. Close ALL the windows, doors and security gates especially after dark.
BUSINESS ROBBERIES:
Businesses that are inside Shopping Centres or Business Parks are currently being targeted, especially during late evenings. Owners and Managers are requested to ensure that their security systems are in good working order. Where security officers are posted at a centre, ensure that they are on patrol especially during the evening and at closing time.
